My work involves the absurd, the ridiculous, and the cliché but with a tongue-and cheek perspective. By selecting the overly used familiar aspects of cultural images, particularly ones that have an element of absurdity or ridiculousness, I can play with the tension between what is predictable and what is shocking or surprising. I hope to leave my viewer with a powerful interest similar to the way one might rubber-neck at the scene of an accident. I want to draw my audience in with the trite, the usual, the comfort of the known, and then hold the attention with the surprise and new meaning. In this way, I hope for my work to be a cultural mirror.
